Mr. Summers enjoys talking to the locals about box construction, but nobody wants to
break with tradition, which is symbolized by the black box. The ritual was symbolized by the
mysterious black box. In Mr. Summer’s opinion, “I wonder why they don’t like the notion of
constructing a new box. This one definitely needs to be swapped out because of how dirty and
worn it is. If there’s going to be another lottery next year, I need to propose a different box. As I
mentioned before, they always defer to my judgment, so I know they won’t have any complaints.
Perhaps I should just take matters into my own hands. In any case, I can switch the box without
anyone noticing. I will recreate it in its current form. Because they’ve been ignored for so long, I
have a hard time remembering where I put the slips of paper.
Calmly, Mr. Summer replied, “I think we better get started and get this done with, so we
can go back to work.” This is Mr. Summer’s opinion: “These are experts who know what they’re
doing. A description of the lottery’s mechanics is unnecessary. We’ve been at this a long time.
Now that the ceremony is over, we may go about our business and hope for a prosperous harvest.
After that, we’ll start getting ready for next year’s lottery.” She said to Mrs. Delacroix, who stood
next to her, “Fresh and oblivious to the day,” and they both chuckled quietly. Mrs. Hutchinson
continued, “I looked out the window, that’s where the kids had gone, and then I recalled it was
the twenty-seventh and came a-running.”
As seen through Mrs. Hutchinson’s eyes: “I’m going to be late if I don’t get going now.
Oh, how I wish my spouse had have reminded me to buy a lotto ticket for today. Kids didn’t even
bother to tell me about it. I’ve arrived so late that now everyone seems to be staring at me.
Someone unfamiliar with the custom would assume I am unaware of its significance.” From Mrs.
Hutchinson’s Perspective: “The people I love the most in the world are right there, and they have
forgotten about me. In order to inform Mrs. Delacroix of my tardiness, I must first pass through
