visual aid
April 21, 2024
imagine that you have just received the following information at work (imagine you are working in a job where the information would apply). Using the data given, create a visual aid that will present the information in the most appropriate way. Efforts to protect the environment have increased over the past decade. Recycling is up by 40%; water use has decreased 50%; vehicle emissions regulations have caused air pollution to decrease by 40%. The increase in recycling products is spread over three main things: aluminum cans (15%), cardboard (20%), and plastic bottles (5%). The water conservation efforts can be explained by a) increasing consumer awareness of wasteful water use (15%), b) increasing the use of restricted water flow faucets in large hotels and resorts (20%), and c) city-mandated restrictions during drought times (15%). Finally, the decrease in air pollution due to emissions regulations can be attributed to a) more public transit (25%) and b) more stringent emissions regulations (15%). Note: You are not required to use a particular software program to complete this assignment. Some suggestions, however, are PowerPoint, Word, or Excel. You could also create an infographic that communicates the statistics as well as graphic information. See https://www.freepower-point-templates.com/articles/how-to-create-infographics-usingpowerpoint/ for helpful tips for creating infographics. This site also has templates you can use. If you search using “creating infographics using PowerPoint,” you can also find video tutorials for creating these. These quotations were taken from Karen Schriver’s Dynamics in Document Design, published by John Wiley and Sons, 1997, pp. 412-413. As you complete the Text and Graphics Assignment, these are the principles to discuss. Consider the following ways to integrate text and graphics: 1. Redundant–“characterized by substantially identical content appearing visually and verbally, in which each mode tells the same story, providing repetition of key ideas.” 2. Complementary–“characterized by different content visually and verbally, in which both modes are needed in order to understand the key ideas.” 3. Supplementary–“characterized by different content in words and pictures, in which one mode dominates the other, providing the main ideas, while the other reinforces, elaborates, or instantiates the points made in the dominant mode (or explains how to interpret the other).” 4. Juxtapositional–“characterized by different content in words and pictures, in which the key ideas are created by a clash or a semantic tension between the ideas in each mode; the idea cannot be inferred without both modes being present simultaneously.” 5. Stage-Setting–“characterized by different content in words and pictures, in which one mode (often the visual) forecasts the content, underlying theme, or ideas presented in the other mode.”
