Four Sociology Questions
April 21, 2024
SOC 105 TEST 1 Below are four short essay questions. You should pick three questions that you want to answer. You will write one to two paragraphs in response to each question you select. You will upload your test as a Word or PDF document into the Test 1 folder in the Assignments section on D2L. You can copy text from your Discussion Board responses, if relevant. However, you cannot copy text directly from a peer, or from my PowerPoint slides. Your responses need to be in your own words. If you cite something from the textbook, be sure to add quotation marks and a page number. You do not need a work cited page, because you will only be using our textbook. You must complete the test on your own. I will grade your test for both content (i.e., response shows depth of thinking, ideas are adequately supported) and writing (i.e., edited for grammar and clarity). Test 1 is due by midnight on Sunday, February 25th. Question Options: 1. Describe the cycle of socialization. What are the results of this cycle? How can we interrupt the cycle of socialization? (reading 5) 2. What does Lipsitz mean by the “possessive investment in whiteness”? What is an example of systematic white privilege? Why is it important to look beyond individual manifestations of personal prejudice and hostility? (reading 12) 3. Why does Dunbar-Ortiz think we must revisit United States history from the perspective of Indigenous peoples? What is missing in the origin narrative of the US? Why does this faulty narrative endure? (reading 11) 4. Coates references the black body throughout his letter. How does his focus on the body convey the experience of racism? Why did he write this letter to his son? (reading 21)
