Assume that this is Katie’s first presentation for treatment, not “two months ago” as suggested at the end of the case study.  Write up your recommendation in a narrative in which you address the following questions:
What initial level of care (using the ASAM criteria outlined briefly in the chapter) would be most appropriate?  Why did you choose this level of care?  Please be sure to cite specific examples from Katie’s experience and connect them to the readings.
What might the continuum of treatment look like for Katie, and what might a timeline look like for her?

Imagine that you’ve recommended for Katie a level of care that is higher than what she’s willing to do.  How would you handle this situation?  Be specific, perhaps using a dialogue in which you’d expect to engage with her.
Some counselors believe that too high of a level of care is just as problematic as too low a level of care.  How might this play out in Katie’s case?
