This week we’ll continue to read Woodward’s general introduction to his project and will complete Chapter 1 of his book.

Woodward believes that the cognitive mechanisms of human beings are mostly rational. What does he mean by “rational”? And how did he respond to the claim that human beings are irrational (stupid)? 
Intuitions (or intuitive judgment about cases) play an essential role in traditional theories of causation. What are Woodward’s assessments about such intuitions? 
There are still concerns about the objectivity of Woodward’s functional approach to causation. Is it subjective? Is it just pragmatic? Woodward tried to clarify different senses of pragmatics and defended his theory as objective, at least in its minimum metaphysical framework. What do you think of Woodward’s theory? Do you agree with him?
