What would be the consequences of following the dictates of your value system? Do conflicts exist between your value system and actions required by the situation? End-of-life decisions are one situation in nursing that may need me to apply my personal religious convictions. However, Christian ideas about end-of-life care, such as removing life support or participating in assisted suicide, might vary. Nurses with strong Christian views may encounter challenges when their personal values collide with the behaviors required by the situation (Christianity in the Nursing Profession – 1124 Words | 123 Help Me, n.d.).
The implications of adhering to my value system may include refusing to give care or restricting the patients autonomy. Recognizing these conflicts requires a grasp of the ethical principles of beneficence, autonomy, and nonmaleficence (Nelson, 2021). As a nurse, I can address these conflicts by consulting with ethics committees, engaging in ethical discussions with colleagues, or requesting reassignment to another patient if required.
When faced with a contradiction between personal Christian convictions and professional responsibilities, nurses should emphasize patient liberty, dignity, and well-being. Open communication, self-reflection, seeking counsel from supervisors or ethics committees, and participating in continuing education can all help nurses deal with these situations (Nelson, 2021). It is also crucial to remember that healthcare workers have a responsibility to care for all patients, regardless of personal views, and to respect the rights and autonomy of those seeking care.
