The attached journal article employed a single-subject reversal design (SSRD) to evaluate the effects of a self-management intervention on improving the on-task behavior of students with emotional and behavioral disorders. In an SSRD, researchers collect baseline data, implement an intervention, withdraw the intervention, and then reinstate baseline conditions. This ABAB design allows researchers to determine if the intervention was responsible for behavior change by analyzing the pattern of behavior across the different phases. The study began with a baseline (A) phase where three middle school students’ on-task behavior was observed during math class. Next, in the intervention (B) phase, the students were taught to use a MotivAider to prompt self-monitoring and self-recording of their on-task behavior every 2 minutes. The intervention was then withdrawn, and a second baseline (A) phase was conducted. Finally, the intervention was reinstated in the second intervention (B) phase. The purpose was to evaluate if the self-management intervention improved each student’s on-task behavior through a comparison of the different phases. The SSRD demonstrated robust experimental control and allowed the researchers to determine the causal relationship between the self-management intervention and increased ontask behavior for each participant. The reversal of phases showed the intervention was the likely reason for behavior change rather than other factors.
