Crises can surface at any time and with little or no notice. Analyzing historical cases on successful and unsuccessful case studies can identify trends and lessons learned that are useful for crisis management program improvement.
For this assignment, you will conduct a case study of a specific crisis event, such as Hurricane Ian, Hurricane Nicole, or the 2022 floods in Eastern Kentucky.
This exercise affords an opportunity to analyze a singular and specific crisis event in relation to crisis management concepts. In addition, you will conduct your own research to identify scholarly and high-quality sources for the crisis event you have chosen.
Case Assignment
Describe and assess a recent major crisis – discuss the following for the specific crisis event you have chosen:
1. Identify and describe the crisis event, including a substantive explanation of the hazard (e.g., tornado, flood, hurricane, etc.) and the impacts on the community (i.e., casualties, property damage, service disruptions, etc.). You must select a specifically identifiable crisis event.
2. If any, what was the element of surprise?
3. In leadership and decision-making, what was the quick timeline of events and decisions to be made?
4. What were some examples of successful decision-making?
5. What were some examples of unsuccessful decision-making?
6. What changes resulted or should be considered – what were the lessons learned?
