Mr. Manuel Sanchez resides in the memory unit of a skilled nursing facility due to his dementia. He is very active and likes to walk throughout the unit. However, he will occasionally enter another residents’ room and sometimes will trip over furniture. Mr. Sanchez is on a number of psychotropic drugs that his adult son, Jeff, is concerned are being used for an improper purpose, which it to inhibit his father’s mobility for the convenience of staff. Because of his condition, Mr. Sanchez is also under the care of a neurologist, who recently conducted a battery of lab tests, with results posted in the patient’s EHR portal. Jeff has his father’s durable power of attorney and was able to view his father’s test results, using his user ID and password, the day after the tests were conducted. Jeff would like to discuss the results with someone who can explain them further because Jeff has an eighth-grade education and English is his second language.
