Joey is a 10-year-old boy with Down Syndrome. He ambulates independently with a wheeled walker; however, Joey is slightly unstable when standing without assistance. Joey wants to be more like his older brother. For Joey, this means wanting to take showers instead of baths and to be able to take them without help from his mom or dad. Joey’s mom has many concerns about this, mainly for Joey’s safety. She would like to see Joey be able to shower independently, but because he has difficulty maintaining his balance and requires minimal assistance with washing his body and washing/rinsing his hair, she would prefer to see Joey have the option to sit when showering. What modifications should be made to the bathroom, including the shower? What adaptive equipment would help Joey become independent in showering?
