Renee Workman is a 35-year-old, G2PO African American client who is at 37 weeks gestation. This pregnancy was conceived by in-vitro fertilization. Renee denies a history of any chronic medical conditions. The pregnancy has been unremarkable until 1 week ago when Renee’s blood pressure was noted to be elevated at a scheduled office visit. A return visit, several days later, confirmed persistent hypertension. There was a mild increase in the liver function lab results noted. The fetal nonstress test was a category 1 and the client was sent home with activity restrictions and daily monitoring of fetal movements. Today Renee was seen in the office with a weight gain of 2 kg (4 lb) in one week. The clients reports that the fetus is not “as active as usual.” Blood pressure was 158/98 mm Hg and 162/96 mm Hg. The patient was referred to the facility for additional evaluation. The client completed a 24 hour urine collection for protein but the results are not available yet. Renee arrived on the unit about 10 minutes ago. The electronic fetal monitor was applied.
