In Healthcare nurses use four types of theories to understand patient care. We have Descriptive theories like Nightingale’s Environmental theory that describe key concepts. Explanatory theories like Calista Roy’s Adaptation Model which explains the “why” behind phenomena like patient adaptation to their self and environment. Predictive theories like Orem’ Self Care Deficit theory which anticipates a patient’s needs and potential outcomes and finally we have prescriptive theories like Virginia Henderson’s Human Need theory that sets action plans for addressing patient’s needs.
Our clinical experiences provide the concepts for refining existing theories or even developing new ones. Observing recurring patterns in patient responses may initiate further research and exploration. By understanding different types of theories to guide us in validating and challeging their propositions, it strengthens and innovates our evidence-based practice of nursing practice. We use theories as tools to critically analyze and apply it in patient assessments and interventions. Also may use theories to identify knowledge gaps or engage in scholarly discussions with co-workers on best practices for patients.
Theories and their concepts serve as a bridge connecting the ever-evolving field of nursing through research. By embracing its multifaceted nature and actively engaging with theoretical concepts, we can contribute to a forever developing future.
