Assignment objectives:
After completing this assignment, you will be able to effectively use the college’s library databases for research purposes.
Students also will demonstrate the use of the citation tool within the database, or be able to transfer citation information to a Word doc or Google doc for essay writing purposes.
Connection to module objectives:
Show an understanding of the purpose of research.
Demonstrate familiarity with research techniques to produce an acceptable research paper.
Correctly use MLA documentation for a Works Cited page.
Steps:
Access the LPC Library web home page to reveal the entrance to the databases.
After clicking “Databases,” select an appropriate database from the long list of possible databases. A good recommendation for this course’s research essay is: Academic Search Ultimate (the first on the list).
Next, log-in with your W ID and PIN.
This will reveal a search box, in which you can type in nearly anything (like a Google search). In this case, maybe start with “Prisons in America,” or “Prisons and Rehabilitation” or “College in Prisons.”
To search only short articles, select “Magazines,” and/or Newspaper” on the side panel labeled “Source Types.” This will help narrow the search.
Select 2-3 articles that could possibly be used in a research paper on our main subject: punishment and rehabilitation in the U.S.
After selecting and opening a search result, select the “Cite” tool on the left side panel. A citation format window will open. Scroll down the window to locate the MLA Edition selection.
A small tip: When taking other courses, such as History (Chicago Edition) or Sociology (APA Edition), the other selections can be used.
Now, copy and paste this Works Cited information (starting with the author’s name) into a Word doc or a Google doc. Do this for each of the articles selected.
