CVS health information breach
The pharmaceutical company CVS Health was one of the organizations that suffered a data breach not long ago. A data breach occurred at CVS Health in June 2023, affecting over 340,000 people. Unauthorized individuals accessed the company’s web interface and stole sensitive patient data, including medical records and medication information (Alwhishi et al., 2022). This incident demonstrated how susceptible electronic health records (EHR) are to hacking and the dangers that may result to patients’ privacy when these systems are breached.
One critical method healthcare businesses may employ to prevent similar breaches and improve data security for EHR and Personal Health Information (PHI) is multi-factor authentication (MFA). Multiple-factor authentication (MFA) necessitates using two distinct methods of confirming a user’s identity, such as a password and a biometric scan or security token. With this additional safeguard, illegal access can still be significantly reduced even if login credentials are compromised.
Implementing multi-factor authentication (MFA) to access electronic health record (EHR) systems and sensitive patient data can significantly enhance data security in a real-world healthcare environment (Chmielewska-Anielak et al., 2022). Improving system security and protecting patient privacy from unwanted access and data breaches would be possible if healthcare professionals and personnel were required to authenticate using their credentials and an extra verification mechanism.
