A 21-year-old male client presented to the ED by medical transport after their roommate discovered the client attempting suicide by hanging themself in the apartment. The client attends the local university but has been placed on academic probation for poor grades and is in jeopardy of losing their athletic scholarship. The client denies any history of mental health problems but confirms that they have not felt like themselves since starting the school year ( 3 months) and getting arrested by campus police for physical assault. The client reports heavy use of marijuana and alcohol. After medical evaluation and clearance by the ED care team, the client was referred to the COPE team for risk assessment evaluation. The client reports that they want to die. The client was transferred to the inpatient psychiatric unit and placed on 1:1 suicide precautions with the client observer.
