A 67-year-old Caucasian female who has history of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) presents to your office for a cat bite to her right thumb. She was bitten by a neighborhood cat 3 days ago. Her thumb is red, inflamed, and painful. Yesterday the nurse practitioner saw the patient in the clinic; the bite area was diagnosed as cellulitis. Amoxicillin/clavulanate (Augmentin) 875 mg bid was prescribed. The patient now complains the swelling and pain is much worse. She also reports sweats, chills, and malaise.
