Article Writing Question
May 5, 2024
You are required to write an essay/ Harvard referencing styleÂ
You will compose one new research question in text analysis, culturomics, and/or corpus linguistics. You should state this research question in the form of a question at the top of your submission.Â
You will describe, explain, and justify an appropriate set of language data to address your research question.
You must state your research question in the form of a question (with a question mark), at the top of your submission. Your research question should be precise, and you should be able to state it succinctly. A research question is different from a topic or a general theme. We have discussed research questions in class, and you can refer to the class slides for examples from the discussion. Your research question may be entirely new and unique, or your research question may be similar (but not identical) to the research questions in the required readings from the module. For example, you may develop a research question that is similar in some way to the research questions addressed by Baker et al. in their book Discourse analysis and media attitudes.Â
In your essay, you must describe, explain and justify a data set or corpus that you would use to address your research question. Your description must be precise and thorough, and you should consider Baker et al.’s description of national UK newspaper data as an example (though, of course, Baker et al.’s description of national UK newspaper data is much longer than 1,000 words). You should state the language, time frame and geographic scope of your data, and other details that are relevant for your research question. Your data set may be historical or contemporary; born digital or not; written or spoken; or in any language. You may propose creating your own corpus, like Baker et al. in Discourse analysis and media attitudes, or you may propose using an existing data set or corpus, such as one of the corpora available via Sketch Engine or the BYU corpus interface, or other corpora available online. Your explanation should present some features of the data’s wider social and cultural context. Your justification must present how and why your data set is appropriate for your research question. You must also critically present limitations to the data. For example: the perfect corpus might not exist, and you might not be able to create it. In that case, what are the limitations of your corpus, and why is it the best choice?Â
