This is a really outstanding question that gets us thinking about the component of our lives that determines what we have the ABILITY to do, which might also highlight our limitations and therefore suggest abilities we need to enhance in order to achieve our goals.
Cool, yes?
For example, perhaps when you assess your abilities you see that you have great programming skills. Therefore, this makes one think that they could have a lucrative career in programming. Of course, this is certainly a valuable skill, although programming normally means working on teams with other technology people. Therefore, if you find yourself a little weak in social skills, achieving your goal of working as a programmer might require enhancing your personal competency of social skills.
Not all of us are born with great social skills, and in fact practicing them in modern day society usually requires some training. So, now you know what is needed for you to achieve your career goal.
Of course, in order for this activity to be truly beneficial, one must be able to assess oneself accurately, and without bias. Most of us think we can assess ourselves accurately, but the truth is that most of us (including me!) have a challenging time acknowledging our own weaknesses.
That’s why this is good practice, because it never happens perfectly the first time. But after doing a few times we can become better and better and assessing ourselves. The better the assessment, the more likely it is that we will achieve our goals.
