INSTRUCTIONS
As you review the case study take time to critically analyze the case and identify the central issues and relevant information for the environmental and public health risk assessment. You will then formulate a logical, thoughtful response using the course information, hour experience, and other scholarly articles and resources to support your findings and recommendations. You have been contacted by a local school board members with concerns about children and some staff coughing, wheezing, and with some difficulty breathing. The school administrator has relayed his concerns about the proximity to the town’s industrial zone, about four kilometers away. There is strong suspicion in the community that the factories are responsible of related levels of Sulfur Dioxide Ozone, Carbon Monoxide and Particulate Matter. The typical school day lasts from Monday through Friday for eight hours for students and around 9 for teachers and staff. You have been asked you to assess any potential health effects associated with factory and make recommendations to your boss, the local health department director, regarding the potential association between the industrial zone’s proximity to the school and the symptoms the children and staff are experiencing. Your job is to prepare a written opinion paper to the health director that addresses the following questions.
1. What are the potential or present environmental/human health hazards from the air pollutants listed in the case study?2. What health issues could be associated with industrial zones that have the potential to cause to human and environmental health?3. What would you recommend be done to assess if the industrial area emissions could be the cause of the symptoms? Who would be the key stakeholders and would you include the factory managers in the process? If so, how?4. What factors might be important to consider for communicating potential risks and the assessment plan to the school? To the community?
