Case Study: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Lana, age 28, has been admitted to the psychiatric unit with a diagnosis of OCD. She hasbeen under the care of a psychiatrist since she was 14 years old. At that time she wasdiagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa. She was treated for that disease and stabilized, and herfamily underwent counseling for about a year. She had a mild recurrence of the diseaseduring her college years but was treated on an outpatient basis. Lana reported to theadmitting nurse that during the past few years she has become increasingly obsessed withneatness and cleanliness. She washes her hands many times a day, and, when possible,changes her clothing several times a day. She spends an enormous amount of time doinglaundry and cleaning her apartment. Her hands crack and bleed from the excessive handwashing. She takes hours to get ready to go somewhere. If the routine is interrupted inany way, she starts over from the beginning. Recently she got up at 1:30 a.m. to startgetting ready for work. She has also started to lose weight again. She has a poor bodyimage, and although her weight is appropriate for her height, she sees herself asoverweight. She tells the nurse that she knows her behavior is inappropriate, but she can’tseem to stop herself. Answer the following questions:
