Technology in Healthcare
Purpose
The purpose of this discussion is to explore the impact of health information systems and important considerations to explore when selecting and evaluating technology.
Course Outcomes
This discussion enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
• CO 2: Demonstrate how current and emerging information and communication technologies are utilized to address the needs of a diverse population. (POs 3, 4)
• CO 4: Describe evidence-based safety, quality, and decision-making support tools embedded in information and communication technologies (POs 4, 8)
• CO 5: Apply ethical, legal, regulatory, and professional standards to the use of information systems and communication technologies (POs 2, 6)
Due Date
Graded discussions in Weeks 1-7 are due Sunday at 11:59 pm MT. For courses with Week 8 graded discussions, the discussion will close on Saturday at 11:59 p.m. MT. All Week 8 discussion requirements must be met by this deadline.

Step 1: Review the scenario below:
• Your healthcare facility is considering implementing a new health information system (HIS). You are on a committee evaluating different systems. As a committee member, you have been assigned to consider the components of a new HIS from different perspectives. Your assigned perspective is based on the first letter of your last name in the chart below.

A – G You are assigned to consider the different components of a HIS from a client perspective.
H – Q You are assigned to consider the different components of a HIS from a healthcare provider perspective.
R – Z You are assigned to consider the different components of a HIS from a legal and ethical perspective.
Step 2: Answer the discussion prompts below with explanation and detail.
• Paragraph one: Based upon your assigned perspective, what components are needed in a new HIS? Why are they important?
• Paragraph two: How would your answer in paragraph 1 differ if the healthcare facility serves diverse populations or is in a remote location with limited technology support? What challenges would need to be considered?
• Paragraph three: Discuss the importance of nursing engagement in the planning and selection of healthcare technologies.

IV. Participate: Participate during the assigned week. You are expected to meet the minimum participation requirement described below. You will receive a 10% point deduction in a graded discussion if you do not post at least two (2) times on at least two (2) different days during the assigned week.
