B. Discussion Topic: Discuss why a lack of planning prior to leaving for an overseas trip could be damaging to relief efforts. It is crazy, or maybe it’s a God thing, that one of the other classes I am taking right now is intercultural communication and engagement. I actually had to look and make sure I was working in the correct class when I watched this week’s video. It has given me so much insight into other cultures and the ramifications of not having cultural intelligence. Not preparing prior to leaving for an overseas relief effort and lack of planning will guarantee one thing, your efforts may become be more damaging than helpful. Everything a person does in another country (and even our own) is for a reason or purpose. Pausing while talking, using arms while you speak or even shaking hands when you greet someone is different than what it is in the United States. The best way to equip individuals is to gain CQ knowledge and strategy. It needs to be studied prior to wherever you would be heading to help. Not learning while submersing yourselves when there like some might think. Things we take for granted as normal, like eye contact while talking can be taken the completely wrong way. It can be seen as disrespectful or even aggressive or combative. Can you imagine what would happen if you went on an overseas trip for relief efforts and they see everyone who shows up as combative? Just the innocence of being naïve can cause so much more difficulty for the very people you’re heading to help.
