ASSIGNMENT 1: Defining behavior
Behavior:
Behavior is anything that an organism does. It is observable and can be measured.
Terms
Topographical definition of behavior:
The topography of a behavior is the form or the shape of the behavior. This means you define the behavior in terms of what it looks like. The behavior should be defined clearly enough to be observed and measured. Avoid the use of unobservable or subjective terms when giving a topographical definition. (hint: avoid adjectives)
Non-example
A non-example of the behavior looks like the behavior but would not be counted. The purpose of the non-example is to clarify any situations in which an action matches the behavior description that would not be counted.
Poor example: (don’t do this)
Behavior: impolite
Definition: Jason is impolite.
Good example:
Good example:
Behavior: interrupting.
Definition: Jayson speaks while other people are talking.
Non-example: Jayson interrupts his friend, who has begun to tell him the end of a show he is watching.
Activity
Join a group (3 students per group)
Identify 3 maladaptive behaviors that a specific organism engages in. (Each student should identify one behavior)
Write a topographical definition of each behavior (each student should write one)
As a group, review the 3 behaviors and topographical definitions. Ensure that you confirm that all behaviors and topographical definitions are good, as the group will receive one grade.
Only one group member should submit the assignment for the group.
Provide either a non-example of the individual engaging in the behavior.
