Discuss the aspects of the economy that are at the core of every country-level macroeconomic analysis:
1. Overall economic activity (real output)
2. Labor market
3. Prices
4. Monetary and Fiscal Policies
In your article, you are expected to:
1. Describe several economic indicators relevant to the topics listed above,
2. Discuss their historical and recent trends,
3. Discuss current and future challenges for economic policy makers.
4. What is the short-term (1-year ahead) outlook for the economy, based on the indicators you have
chosen?
5. What is the medium to long-term (several years ahead) outlook for the economy, based on the
indicators you have chosen?
As you may know, there are a multitude of current events that affect all the variables mentioned above: we are on what seems to be the end of the pandemic (but we’ve thought—wrongly—we’ve been there before),there are serious supply-side shocks including high oil prices and supply chain shortages, and growing uncertainty over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Some useful references for content include:  The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, voxeu.org (one of the best sources around), FRB publications like those in Homework 3, and the FRED Blog. Also, top business schools like Chicago Booth and Harvard Business School put out non-academic pieces based on current faculty research that can be used as sources. Of course, academic work can be a useful source if you have the skill to digest it and write about it in a non-technical manner. In terms of data, FRED is your best friend, but feel free to use other reputable sources (there is a document with several sources on CANVAS). Remember to cite all
your bibliographical and data sources.
There is no page limit, but you should aim to be concise without sacrificing relevant analysis. In other words, if
you think something should be discussed, do not leave it out just to make the article shorter, but be efficient in your writing. This is a great skill to master.
The rubric at the end of this document is a useful guide to increasing your chances of obtaining a high grade.
