Emily, a 45- year- old Caucasian female, is seen in office today for complaints of difficulty falling asleep. She reports insomnia symptoms are occurring 3-5 times a week. The patient states this has been going one for 2 months and she is exhausted. She has a past medical history of Seasonal Affective Disorder and stage 1 hypertension. She reports taking Lexapro to help manage depression symptoms and Lisinopril for hypertension. She reports that once she is asleep, she has no trouble staying asleep. She is worried because lately she is over sleeping her alarm clock or going to work exhausted. She is in office today to inquire about a sleep aide. She shares concerns about sleep aid medications and worried she will not get a “natural” kind of sleep. She adamant that she does not want a medication that will make her feel “drugged” or “groggy”.
