Every individual has a story to tell, shaped by their experiences, passions, and the paths they choose to follow. In geriatric social work, these stories become intertwined with a commitment to care for and support our elderly population, particularly those who have served our country with courage and dedication. In the context of aging services, I had the privilege of interviewing Christopher Loglia, a dedicated geriatric social worker and the Long Island Veterans Home assistant director. In preparation for my interview with Chris, I researched his roles and responsibilities extensively. I began by analyzing geriatric social work, which involves supporting older adults daily, helping them navigate healthcare systems, and advocating for their rights. I delved into scholarly articles to comprehensively understand the challenges and rewards associated with this profession. I explored the agency’s website, reviewed its mission statement, services, and programs, and read any available annual reports or newsletters. This helped me understand the agency’s goals and how Chris’s role contributes to achieving them. Through our conversation, I gained insight into his profound commitment to serving our nation’s veterans and his vital role in enhancing their quality of life. According to Chris, the Long Island State Veterans Home offers veterans a wide range of services, including round-the-clock nursing and sub-acute care. These services are designed to provide the highest quality health care to Long Island’s veterans, reflecting the agency’s mission. The Veterans Home also proposes access to advanced medical technology and top healthcare professionals, thanks to its affiliation with Stony Brook Medicine. In addition to providing health care services, the Veterans Home also serves as a model site for research and the education and training of future long-term care and senior professionals. This aspect of the agency’s mission underscores its commitment to advancing methods and standards of care. The Veterans Home’s services’ impact on veterans and their families is profound. As Chris shared, the agency’s commitment to serving those who served the nation is evident in the compassionate care they provide, regardless of race, gender, religion, disability, age, or national origin. Chris discussed that his primary role is to conduct cognitive assessments for veterans who have dementia or Parkinson’s disease. He also administers depression scales to his clients, providing a comprehensive understanding of their mental health. Beyond individual assessments, Chris is pivotal in facilitating support groups for families, offering them a platform to share experiences and gain mutual support. He also conducts resident and family counseling, providing a holistic approach to care. Chris’s work extends to assisting Gold Star parents of veterans, a task that requires empathy and understanding. However, his role is challenging. He highlighted the difficulties faced by his clients, such as medication management, limited transportation, and the transition to telehealth. These challenges necessitate innovative solutions and a patient-centric approach. In terms of interventions and approaches, Chris described an interdisciplinary method. This involves collaborating with other professionals to provide comprehensive care to his clients. He emphasized the importance of transparency with the client and their family, fostering trust and open communication. Throughout the interview, I employed effective communication skills and developed open communication with the interviewee, which allowed for a collaborative and open discussion, enabling me to understand Chris’s role better and the complexities of geriatric social work. This approach enriched my knowledge and demonstrated the importance of effective communication in social work. I then asked Chris if there were any other challenges he still needed to share with me. He then conveyed about burnout in this field
