Geol 1122 Intro Geosciences II: Historical Geology, spring 2023 Essay Assignment for “Your Inner Fish” Episode 1 Description: This is an open-ended three-page minimum (12 pt font, double-spaced) essay assignment based on a film about evolution. That said, you must underpin your essay on the content of the film “your Inner Fish: part I”. Use a word processor (Word, or Google Docs for example) to type your essay and save it frequently. In grading your essay, I am looking to see that you (1) watched the film, and (2) had thoughts about the content that you discuss in the essay. Instead reflect on specific aspects of the content that relate to the evolution of life, including vertebrates like fishes, the evolution of the human body, and/or any other related aspects of our course interesting to you. While you watch the film, take out a piece of paper and pencil (or your laptop) and pause throughout to jot down some thoughts. You may also want your textbook or lecture slides handy. As a suggestion, you may discuss the following in your essay (in addition to the film itself): • What is evolution, and how does it work? • What were the main points of the film? • What did you learn about evolution in the film that was new to you? • What was the most surprising aspect of the film? • What questions do you still have after watching the film? • What is the significance of the anatomical similarities between humans and fish? At the end of your essay, come up with an essay question about the film that could be used on a quiz or an exam for this class. Provide a on-paragraph answer for the question. 1 What to turn in: An essay written by you in your own words, about the film and your reflection or discussion about topics related to evolution. Your essay should be no shorter than three full pages (typed, double-spaced, size 12 font). Your essay should include: • A title page with your name, date, and the title of your essay. • A reference list at the end of your essay.
