During the Cold War, the United States embarked on a grand strategy of maintaining an alliance system and containment of the Soviet Union and communist expansion. Discuss the merits and drawbacks of this dual-focused system, including (but not limited to) your personal assessment. Include in your answer a discussion of U.S. involvement in Vietnam; could that war have been avoided given U.S. strategy? Should it have been? Why or why not? Finally, include how the Reagan Doctrine continued or changed the U.S. Cold War grand strategy. How successful was his approach/strategy in ending the Cold War? Why?
