Order Instructions
Reflect on the readings and answer the questions provided. The questions offer a way to structure your response paper. You do not however need to answer them chronologically as long as you submit a 2-3pg double spaced paper.
 
Response papers are an opportunity to explore ideas and theoretical concepts. Do not feel like you have to write ‘academically’ or following any particular style. Write in a manner that feel comfortable for you. Write conversationally if you want.
 
1. How do the authors define ethnography? What data does ethnographic fieldwork comprise of? What ultimately is the goal of of ethnographic research?
2. In your own words, please explain what you understand ethnographic fieldnotes to be?
 
In your responses be sure to consider the following:
 
What do fieldnotes comprise of and capture? Why is writing descriptively integral to writing fieldnotes? What kind of data and findings does the process of ethnographic fieldnotes allow?
Why do the authors suggest that it is important for the researcher’s voice to be incorporated in fieldnotes? What do the authors’ mean when they say “the task of the ethnographer is to reveal the multiple truths apparent in others’ lives?”
Reflect on the authors’ comments about interpretation, framing and representation in ethnographic writing. Hint: think of their explanation of translation, narration and textualization to help you.
