Identity Paper – Due Sunday,
Directions: You are to compose (this means you MUST “touch” the 4th page) Identity Paper OR create a 7-10-minute video or podcast that explores and examines how you self-identify (or don’t) across the identitary intersections of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, etc. To be submitted on Canvas. Make sure it’s not in Pages or something unreadable through Google docs.
You may attack this assignment in whatever way you deem fit – through personal anecdotes (stories, lived experiences), autobiographical explanation, influences, family history, formative moments where you may have experienced some form of discrimination, injustice or privilege – so long as you cover your identitary placement (or lack thereof in some instances) and reach the minimum page length.
Although you may adopt a playful, humorous tone, be mindful that you must write in a formal, academic manner. These are to be typed, double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman font.
In case you’re experiencing writer’s block, you may want to consider the following questions:
Telling your story:
• What/Who has informed your identity construct as of this point?
• According to your identity construct, what was your most profound memory surrounding oppression/injustice?
• If this has not been your experience when did you recognize that you were different from others experiencing oppression and injustice?
• How did it make you feel?
• How did you respond?
Where are you now?
• How has the experience surrounding injustice informed your worldview or perspective?
• At this point in your journey, do you feel equipped to assist various communities that experience oppression/marginalization? How and why or why not?
• What does your understanding of social justice look like?
