Patient Education Materials Assignment Information
For this assignment, you will create patient education materials on a healthcare topic of your choice. These materials MUST be written at or below an 8th-grade reading level.
You can choose to create your materials in any of the following formats:
Trifold Brochure Example
One- or two-page Handout Example
One- or two-page Interactive/fillable handout/checklist Example
On a separate page, you will provide a list of references that you used to create your education materials, in APA 7th edition format.

Important notes:

Your materials must be partly VISUAL in nature. Do not provide materials that are more than 80% text/written materials. Include images/graphics/tables, color, pictures, etc. Ask yourself, would I read this if presented to me? What if I only read at an 8th grade level? What if I prefer pictures?

Group information into small chunks. Allow the reader to “digest” the information without overloading it with extensive comments.

Consider if what you are presenting might scare or offend the reader. Might some readers flinch or cringe at the sight of blood in an image or purulent drainage/wounds? Might a reader be put off by only gender binary images or a lack of racial or ethnic diversity?

Avoid medical jargon when at all possible. Your materials should be understandable to the “lay” person with a minimal reading level.

Consider directing the reader to additional resources/information.
