Most family decision-making passes through a series of phases to reach satisfactory or unsatisfactory decisions. Using the problem-solving loop developed by Kieren, Maguire, and Hurlburt is a valuable path to take when considering these decisions.  Each of the model’s eight steps identifies the beginning and ending of different patterns of interaction in problem solving. Note, the eight steps of the loop can be condensed into four phases based on the similarity of activity family members perform.
