For your project this week, find and describe an example of magical thinking present in contemporary US society (or another society with which you are familiar). Your example could be an everyday superstition, a thing that you or others you know do for luck (or to avoid harm), or practice from a religious tradition you are aware of that uses magic. 
First, describe your example. What rules does it follow? What practices or activities does it entail? 
Second, is your example best described as magic, divination, or something else (such as witchcraft…which we’ll talk about more next week)? Why? Does the Law of Similarity or the Law of Contagion apply to your example? If so, how?
Third, what is the social context of your example? Who uses or believes in the practice you selected? What sort of contexts is your practice used or not used? What can this practice tell you about US society more broadly (or the society or culture that employs the example you selected?
