WHY IS THIS ASSIGNMENT IMPORTANT?
It is increasingly important for health care professionals to identify their own values, beliefs as related to cultural issues and practice. The purpose of this assignment is for students to become aware of their own culture, beliefs and heritage and how this shaped who you are today. This assignment aligns with Module objective 1 and 3.
WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO:
1) Read The Importance of Cultural Heritage and What is Cultural Heritage and Why Social Science – Because it can Help Preserve Cultural Heritage…; Also, search on your own and find articles and key terms/definitions on importance of cultural heritage.
Each of you in this class comes from a different cultural background. Begin a class discussion by answering the following questions. You may find it helpful to interview your parents and grandparents and have a conversation with them on your heritage – those types of conversations are very meaningful!

What is your sociocultural heritage? What is the country of origin of your family? How many generations of your family have lived in the U.S.?
What major sociocultural events have occurred in your lifetime? How have these events influenced you?
What is the demographic profile of the community you grew up in? How has it changed?
What home remedies did your family use to protect or restore health?
What did they do to take care of you when you were sick?
What are your family’s/community health beliefs regarding dying and death?
How has your culture impacted your perception of the world, how you act, what you expect?
Why is it important to understand ones’ cultural heritage as related to cultural diversity? What are the benefits of knowing your cultural heritage?

3) Post a Collage (5pts): Be creative! Create a one page cultural collage using symbols or emblems, places, events, features of everyday life, traditions, music. Consider using infographics, etc. Use illustrations to show respect of your cultural dress, dance, beliefs, overall culture. You must have at least six pictures.
