Final Exam Class Discussion Assignment
Correlational Research is different from historical and descriptive research. It provides some indication as to how two or more things are related to one another or, in effect, what they share or have in common, or how well a specific outcome might be predicted by one or more pieces of information.
One of the most important points about correlational research is that while it examines relationships between variables, it in no way implies that one causes changes in the other. In other words, correlation and prediction examine associations but not causal relationships, wherein a change in one factor directly influences a change in another.
Give an example each of how correlational research differs from historical and descriptive research and how it is related to both historical and descriptive research. You must write at least one complete paragraph when answering this question, and you must reply to at least two more students’ post. one or two line answers will NOT be accepted and will not be given credit.
ANGEL’S POST:
Final Exam Class Discussion
Correlational study is unlike historical or descriptive in the sense it involves analyzing two or more variables and does not assume causality. To illustrate, a correlational study could be to compare amount of study time among students with that of their equivalent performance in tests. Although the study could bring out a positive relationship it would not be possible to quantify to more study time leads to better performance as the two are related. On the other hand, history research involves studying past events for instance, a historical research can be conducted whereby the researcher aims to understand how industrialization affected todays education system and descriptive research involves gathering data about a phenomenon such as with intentions of describing, detailing and recording classroom behavior in order to describe students engagement levels.
Nonetheless, correlational research has some resemblance with both historical and descriptive research. Similar to historical research approach, correlational studies utilize previous data to analyze variables in existence, for instance using records to analyze the current pattern in public health and social status. In the same way, Correlational research is related with descriptive research since it encompasses describing a set of correlational relations or associations between variables. For instance, both approaches may practice the survey data source and narrate outcomes in terms of trends or patterns. What sets correlational research apart is the fact that unlike descriptive research it quantitatively examines the nature of relationships, how strong or in what direction the relationships between variables are, the hope being that something can be identified as a predictor, or an association even though correlation does not necessarily imply causation like the experiments would.
INFINITI’S POST:
While both correlation research and historical research look at relationships between variables, the main difference is that correlational research focuses on determining the strength and direction of a relationship between two variables in the present without manipulating them, whereas historical research aims to understand past events and trends by analyzing historical data sources, often looking for patterns and connections within a specific time period. Correlational research and historical research have similarities in that they both analyze relationships between variables without modifying them, rely on existing data to identify patterns and trends, and frequently use archival sources to gather information, particularly when studying historical events. An example would be a study that investigates the relationship between hours studying and test scores. While historical would at past scores and study hours and compare them to the present data.
While descriptive research simply describes the characteristics of a population or phenomenon, focusing on “what is,” whereas correlational research investigates the relationship between two or more variables, aiming to understand “how” variables are connected to each other without necessarily establishing causation. Descriptive research provides a brief overview of a situation, while correlational research investigates potential relationships between different aspects of that situation. An example of descriptive research is conducting a survey to understand the average income level of residents in a specific city, while correlation would look at the average income to the specific areas in a specific city.
