Week 4 Project: Cross-Cultural Fusion Analysis
April 21, 2024
Part of the phenomena of world music is the appropriation by Western musicians of non-Western instruments, sounds, structures and styles. These types of recordings are often referred to as “world beat,” “ethno pop,” or “world pop.” This PowerPoint presentation will analyze and evaluation the appropriation of music from other cultures.
For this PowerPoint presentation, you will choose one of the following recordings:
RECORDINGS:
Peter Gabriel, “Passion” (created for The Last Temptation of Christ soundtrack based upon Middle Eastern music)
Outback, “Dance the Devil Away” (Australian Aboriginal music combined with folk guitar)
Baka Beyond, “Spirit of the Forest” (jam sessions with Baka Pygmies and composer/guitarist Martin Cradick
Linda Ronstadt, “Por un Amor” (featuring Mexican and Mexican-American musicians)
Talking Heads, “Born Under Punches” (appropriation of scratch, funk, Afro-Beat and jùjú rhythm)
“Diaraby,” guitarist Ry Cooder with Ali Farka Toure, a griot from the Sahara
Robbie Robertson and the Red Road Ensemble, “Coyote Dance” (pop music with Native American music)
Led Zeppelin, “Kashmir” (collaboration with musicians from Egypt)
Choose one recording from the list above. Create a PowerPoint presentation that includes the following slides:
Slide 1: An introduction providing an overview of the main points of the presentation. The introduction slide should mention the recording and artist/s.
Slide 2: Briefly describe the musical and aesthetic concept behind the recording answering this question: “What was the goal of the artists?” Be sure to do some research on the artist/s and recording.
Slide 3: Discuss how traditional non-Western music is incorporated into the sound of the music. Be sure to utilize musical terminology and scholarly sources to express your ideas.
Slide 4: Does the Western artist show musical respect for the imported tradition(s) represented on the recording? If so, how? If not, why not?
Slide 5: Offer a critical evaluation about ways in which the project succeeds or fails as music, and in developing cross-cultural relationships and understanding.
Slide 6: A conclusion wrapping up the main points of the presentation. The conclusion slide should mention the recording and artist/s.
Slide 7: A reference slide citing the sources used in the project. The reference slide should include a reference for the recording and resources used in the project. Please note that any source listed in the reference section needs to be cited in the body of the text in at least one of the slides in the presentation. Here is an excellent resource for formatting references and citations in the body of the text.
