Thesis: The Raft of the Medusa became an eye-opener to the public because they were shown that due to the French’s selfishness and negligence, and because of what the people sacrificed on the raft with starvation and dehydration. They weren’t rescued until several days later. Many suffered at their hands.

1. Why did Gericault do this painting and how did he focus on social responsibility/prejudice/incompetence in the painting? Why did it happen? Why did some get lifeboats while others got a raft with little food?
2. What is the name of the black man who heroically waves at the ship Argus on the horizon and why did Gericault place him there at the top of the “pyramid of hope” as a hero? Why did Gericault use him?
3. What modern day current event/analogy is similar? Be specific and do not answer this in a general manner. This means you must know something about current events. Make a comparison in your answer. This is a thoughtful question with many possible answers
