Family Triangulation:
Family Triangulation is a maladaptive response to stress by undifferentiated members of a dysfunctional family system. Stress can destabilize a dyad, or two-person system. Triangulation is the process of recruiting a third member to a dyad, creating a triad, to stabilize the system. When anxiety overloads the triad, the distress spreads to other members and can result in interlocking triangles. These triangles increase relational dysfunction.
A well-differentiated person is able to separate and balance thinking and feeling, maintain objectivity and flexibility, and manage stress. Triangulation increases as un-differentiation increases in family systems.
